The Kuredu Island Resort

Just thinking of a Maldives vacation might sound expensive to a lot of people, but actually it’s not. If you want, you can easily spend a week or two here at a very low and reasonable budget, or if you want you can go all haywire. This guide will show you both sides of Maldives, be it the luxurious style of living or just an affordable vacation.

Reaching Maldives

Getting to the Maldives used to cost a great amount of time and money, with flights upwards of $1000 and a bunch of layovers. But not anymore, now the tickets are cheap and some airlines provide non-stop flights to Maldives.

Now a days local airlines are offering very cheap and reasonable flights to the Maldives. For example, Emirates Airline from Dubai International Airport(DXB) to Velana International Airport(MLE) now costs as low as $300 USD. Low-cost airline such as AirAsia just introduced a route from their hub in Kuala Lumpur with fares as low as $130. You could travel for less then $300 USD from any nearby countries such as India, Srilanka, Singapore, Malaysia, etc. There are many airlines that fly to Maldives from all parts of the world.

If you are flying anywhere from the North America, South America, Europe, your international airfare can get a bit pricey. It would cost you on an average around $900 USD round-trip, which is pretty normal for anyone traveling half the globe.

Getting Around

Once you arrive at Velana international airport, you could take a ferry ride or a seaplane to travel to another island. The ferries from the airport to Malé(capital of Maldives) departs every 15 minutes, and it costs around $1 USD. It takes 20 minutes for the ferry to reach Malé.

There are other way to travel, either rent a speedboat or fly on a domestic plane to reach the further islands.

The cheapest way to travel from one island to another will be by taking a public ferry. It would cost anywhere from $5 to $20 USD. If you want to visit an island that is very far from Malé then you will need to do island hopping. Ferries usually don’t run every day to far away islands, so you could fly on a domestic flight which could cost around $150 USD or you could rent a speedboat for $250 USD a day.

Maldives Accommodation

Once you have arrived at the Velana international airport,  you don't have to worry about your stay. Maldives provides a variety of accommodations choices. You have an option of staying at a guest houses, liveaboards, hotels or resorts.

Maldives is known for its luxurious style of living. Luxury means money, but since 2009 it has become cheaper to stay at Maldives. Since 2009, the Maldivian government has allowed local home owners to rent out their homes to others. So, now you could live at the Maldives for as low as $50 USD per night.

Want to stay at a Resort? If you are looking for lavish style of living (most visitors travel to Maldives for this reason), you will not be disappointed. Maldives offers many 5 star resorts with breathtaking views.

While there are many resorts, our favorite is the Paradise Island Resort & Spa.

Paradise Island Resort & Spa

Why is it our favorite?  Because the Paradise Island Resorts & Spa provides everything that other resorts provide at a reasonable price. Also they are located only 10 KM away from the Velana International airport. Usually a night stay would cost you around $300 USD which is very reasonable compare to other resorts.

Another way of living on Maldives is on a Liveaboards. Liveaboards are best for tourist who came to Maldives to explore the underwater life.

Dining on Maldives

The Maldives islands consist of only 1% of land and the rest is covered with water, it is not surprising that fish is Maldivians favorite meal.

The food at Maldives are mostly influenced by a mix of Indian, Arabian and Sri Lankan cuisine. Almost all the resorts on the Maldives islands offer diverse international menus as well as conventional Maldivian dishes. Eating in the city of Malé gives tourists the best opportunity to try real, local food.

Fihunu Mas

Fihunu Mas is one of the most popular dishes in Maldives.
