Looking for Cheap Place to Stay in the Maldives

I'm visiting friends from grad school in Madras, India and Colombo, Sri Lanka. We'd love to visit the Maldives Islands but don't need to stay in luxury resorts. Plus, I'm already shelling out a lot of money for the airfare and rather spend the rest of my travel cash on activities instead of lodging.

Are they any cheap places to stay in the Maldives Islands? Cabins or huts for rent on the beach?
